About Michael O’Mara, LMHC

As a licensed mental health counselor, I am dedicated to providing accessible and effective teletherapy services to individuals across Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I am ready to help you move past "just getting by" so you can start showing up fully in your own life.

I don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach to mental health. You are a complex human being, not a diagnosis. My style is collaborative, direct, and grounded in science. I combine deep empathy with evidence-based techniques to ensure our sessions are both supportive and productive.

Whether you are navigating the intrusive thoughts of OCD or the heavy weight of past trauma, we will work together to build a toolkit that works for your specific issues.

Why Teletherapy?

Telehealth is about flexibility. Life is busy, and your mental health shouldn't be a logistical nightmare. By offering sessions exclusively via a secure audio/video platform, I bring the office to you.

Whether you’re on your lunch break in Providence or in your favorite chair in Boston, you can access high-level clinical care from the comfort and privacy of your own space.

Areas of Specialty

While I treat a wide range of concerns, I have specialized training and a particular passion for working with:

  • OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder): Moving beyond the stereotypes and offering effective treatment.

  • PTSD & Trauma: Processing the past so it stops hijacking your present.

  • Anxiety, Phobias, Worry, & Panic: Learning to quiet the "alarm system" in your body.

I also help individuals with a variety of issues including depression, grief, loss, and the stresses of life including family, work, and relationships.

The Toolkit: Evidence-Based Care

I utilize specialized modalities that are proven to create lasting neurological and emotional change. We won't just talk about the problem; we will actively work to change how your brain processes it.

  • ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention): The gold standard for treating OCD and phobias.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): A powerful tool for "unsticking" traumatic memories.

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): Identifying and reframing the thought patterns that keep you stuck.

I also use mindfulness and motivational interviewing techniques to help people move forward with treatment and their goals in life.

Education and Credentials

I hold a master's degree and a certificate of advanced graduate study (CAGS) in metal health counseling from Rhode Island College. I have worked in the field of mental health in various capacities for over 25 years. I have maintained a private practice in counseling and psychotherapy since 2014.
